Difficult Moment

I think that the most difficult time I’ve ever had is when I almost failed Physics. I was freaking out because I got under 40 in almost every quiz we had. I thought I was really going to fail, with a very bad grade. When the final quiz came, I study like crazy, for literary one week at least 3 hours per day. When the day came I was really nervous, I couldnt sleep. That morning I decided not to think about it in any class until the test came. In the fourth period finally we had the exam, I was really nervous, and I prayed a lot for getting a good grade. When I finished it, I was 99.9% sure I did well, because I’ve studied so hard for it. The next day, our teacher had our grades, I did really well, I got an 80, which for me was pretty awesome. This is how I learned that by putting all my effort in getting what I want, I can achieve everything. This is how I solved my difficult moment. It wasn’t easy, but ever effor has its reward.

Is Holden a typical teenager?

In my perspective, he is a typical teenager.  He’s a heavy smoker, which most teens at my age do now a day, so this makes him have problems breathing. Another thing about Holden is that he is a terrific liar. “I’m the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life”. (page 16) When people ask him what he’s doing he makes something up, and makes a total different thing, than what he’s really doing. Other problem is that he has been kicked out of many schools, including Pencey, and it’s normal that teenage boys that don’t have good grades and have a bad behavior are kicked out, so that also describes him as a typical teenager. This also tells he hates school, as most of teenagers. He got along with his history teacher, Mr Spencer, which is nothing so common in teenagers, but he was the only one who understood him, even though he failed his class. He had bad behavior, he was unscrupulous, and he was also a sex addict. This are many of the characteristics or traits why I consider he’s a typical teenager, he smokes, hates school, fails classes, has high self esteem and has bad behavior.

2. The American Dream

I consider the American Dream as a way that people fought for their freedom, for equality and having an opportunity and the right to live that every American deserved to have

3. Do I think the American Dream is still valid?

I don’t think that people still see it as “the American Dream” like the way it was before, but I do believe that some people are still looking forward to equality, and to have the rights they deserve.

BTW. Miss P I’m so sorry I turned it in until today, REALLY!!

The Lost Generation (Isabel Lara y Jimena Guzman)

1.  What is it?

– Post World War I generation, specially American writers living in Paris, “careless and heavy drinkers”, who stablishe their literary reputations in 1920. “The generation was “lost” in the sense that its inherited values were no longer relevant in the postwar world” (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/348402/Lost-Generation)

2. What was Hemingway’s role?

– This term “A lost generation” was created by Gertrude Stein, but Hemingway helped to create it. He was the first person named on this generation. His book that popularized this term was “The sun also rises” he used it as a memorial. In this book he talks about the post generation of WWI.

3. Why is Gertrude Stein so important?

– She was a collector of modern art. As an adult she began to write in Paris. She is considered the “mother” of the Lost Generation. Some people considered she wasn’t a part of this generation, but in fact she was, actually, she develops her own writing style.

4. It was a house where artists and painter got together to work. They got together on saturday evenings to help define modernism.

5. Expatriate

Harlem Renaissance

1. Marcus Garvey. He was the founder of Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA).

2. First it created the first black middle class, but at the same time it created more racism to the African American. Still the racism in the North was much less then in the South. The black middle class began to create a political law to avoid racism (1900s). Another important thing is that in 1924 was the first Civic Club dinner (Fauset’s book publishing). A year later Survey Graphic magazine published an issue about this movement (Harlem).20100418073413XavyV

Transcendentalism Songs

“The River”

You know a dream is like a river
Ever changin’ as it flows
And a dreamer’s just a vessel
That must follow where it goes
Trying to learn from what’s behind you
And never knowing what’s in store
Makes each day a constant battle
Just to stay between the shores…and

I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I’ll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry

Too many times we stand aside
And let the waters slip away
‘Til what we put off ’til tomorrow
Has now become today
So don’t you sit upon the shoreline
And say you’re satisfied
Choose to chance the rapids
And dare to dance the tide…yes

I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I’ll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry

There’s bound to be rough waters
And I know I’ll take some falls
But with the good Lord as my captain
I can make it through them all…yes

I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I’ll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry

Yes, I will sail my vessel
‘Til the river runs dry
‘Til the river runs dry

– This is related with the poem not just because it talks about a river (natura) but that it relates it with life and with dreams because they flow and they not stay the same always, they change.

“Free Your Mind”

Prejudice, wrote a song about it.
Like to hear it? Here it go.

I wear tight clothing, high heeled shoes
It doesn’t mean that I’m a prostitute, no no
I like rap music, wear hip hop clothes
That doesn’t mean that I’m out sellin’ dope no no
Oh my forgive me for having straight hair, no
It doesn’t mean there’s another blood in my heir yeah yeah
I might date another race or color
It doesn’t mean I don’t like my strong black brothers.

Why oh why must it be this way
Before you can read me you gotta learn how to see me, I said
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don’t be so shallow.
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don’t be so shallow

So I’m a sistah
Buy things with cash
That really doesn’t mean that all my credit’s bad, oooh
So why dispute me and waste my time
Because you really think the price is high for me
I can’t look without being watched, and oh
You rang my buy before I made up my mind, OW!
Oh now attitude, why even bother
I can’t change your mind, you can’t change my color

Why oh why must it be this way?
Before you can read me you gotta learn how to see me, I said
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don’t be so shallow…

Why oh why must it be this way?
Before you can read me you gotta learn how to see me, I said
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don’t be so shallow… FREE YOUR MIND!

– This is related with individualism because you need to learn to think by yourself, make your own choices and define your own path. No one else has the right to tell you what to do and, that’s why it says free your mind, do what your heart and your mind tells you to do and not what the rest of the world does.

SONG

I’ve seen the world
Done it all, had my cake now
Diamonds, brilliant, and Bel-Air now
Hot summer nights mid July
When you and I were forever wild
The crazy days, the city lights
The way you’d play with me like a child

Will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful
Will you still love me when I got nothing but my aching soul
I know you will, I know you will
I know that you will
Will you still love me when I’m no longer beautiful

A. RHYMES: July – Lights. Wild – Child. Beautiful – Soul.

B. WORDS REPEATED: Will, still, young, beautiful

C. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME? Actually it doesn’t means anything. The fact that us, girls doubt about if guys will feel the same way they feel about us right now when we become older and less beautiful. I also love this song not just because I love Lana del Rey but it’s lyrics are so deep and beautiful. I like that this type of music represents the feelings that the singer is trying to express through the song. Maybe the only meaning this song gives to me it’s the fact that I went to watch The Great Gatsby (movie sountrack) and it made me cry like crazy.

D. HOW DOES THE RHYME ENHACE IT? It makes the song more catchy, and make the person that is listening to it get attached to it. It also makes it sound as a poem and it’s more fun to listen to it.
